Documents to be used for official purposes in foreign countries – such as birth certificates, police records, company by-laws, power of attorney, patent application, corporate good standings – are often required to be authenticated.

Authentication is the process of verifying the official nature of the document so that it can be accepted at face value by officials in another country.

There are different ways in which documents and translations can be authenticated. For instance, documents going to the Hague Convention signatory States need only to be authenticated by the attachment of an "apostille".
